The author, Diana Gleadhill, a retired librarian from County Down, recounted her search for adventure with an old school friend, Elise Coburn, in one of the worlds last great pristine wildernesses: a inhospitable land without tourist infrastructure, but replete with amazing natural beauty, wildlife and native culture. NEW BOOK ON HISTORY OF SOVIET RUSSIA BY ORLANDO FIGES The Whisperers: Private Life in Stalin's Russia. This book is the result of an amazing large-scale research project which really began as a series of interviews by Figes when he was a graduate student in Moscow in the mid 1980s. Masterfully composed and controlled as a narrative by Figes, this is a collective testimony in which you can hear voices recounting the hopes, fears and numberless awful tragedies of the Soviet era. FIRST EVER RUSSIAN FILM FESTIVAL IN LONDON STARTED ON THURSDAY The first ever Russian Film Festival is to be held in London at Apollo West End. This is a long-awaited opportunity for British audiences to view the portrayal of modern Russia through contemporary Russian cinema. A UNIQUE BRITAIN - RUSSIA CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH On 12 September 2007 Battersea Park in London saw a unique gathering of English and Russian celebrities from the worlds of the film, music and politics who were playing in a special charity football match. England's heroic scorers were comedian Andy Smart, actor and musician Keith Warwick, pop singer and son of the Status Quo legend Rick Parfitt Jr and Guy Burnett. The event was held to raise awareness and funds for the Give Life Foundation which supports young leukaemia sufferers in Russia.
