The restaurant Camelot, in the center of St.-Petersburg, is full of spirit and idea of chivalry. When you go down the stairs, you are in a tower with a small latticed window through which you can see a wonderful view – a graceful suite of light vaulted halls which leads you to the throne of a legendary King Arthur. Lovers of knight novels will surely love it here. The design and the dishes here in this or that way are related to the knight theme. You will be offered a rich variety of fish and meat courses, the very names of which promise quite a special dinner. The wine list is the restaurant’s pride. It has more than 100 sorts of wine and many judges gave compliments to it.

ACADEMIA

Working hours: 12.00-last dinner
Additional service: business lunch

Though it can't seem to decide whether it's mass-market or elitist, Academia’s food is consistently good. The restaurant offers a menu of Japanese, Chinese, Italian and French cuisine. The place is not as stylish as the other restaurants on this corner, but it's less expensive. The vaulted brick ceilings provide good acoustics during live music performances on weekends. The shelves along the walls hold a haphazard collection of books, but they appear to be more for show than for actual reading. Menu highlights include the pikeperch and the T-bone steak, a cut of meat you don't find often in Russia. The pungent "hangover cabbage stew" is an acquired taste, but its fans insist it does the trick after a vodka-drenched night. The restaurant is sometimes closed for private parties, so it's a good idea to call in advance even though reservations are not necessary. Live music.

Working hours: 10.00-3.00

As the name might suggest, this cellar bar right in the center of the city is designed with a Viking theme. The rather lush menu contains dishes such as Flaming Mermaids or Sizzling Spit, “served on a Viking sword”. There is also a stage area through the back decked out with purple velvet fabrics. It should all be good fun, but the place seems tо take itself far too seriously, as witnessed by the dry welcome from suited doormen. House specialties include tasty steaks, hearty soups, and salads. Valhall also features a separate vegetarian menu with several dinner and appetizer choices. After visiting the Russian Museum or Shostakovich Philharmonic take a short walk over to Nevsky Prospect and the Valhall restaurant for a long leisurely lunch or dinner.

This is a top choice for lunch or dinner in the once-neglected neighborhood around Chernyshevskaya metro station, which now boasts numerous antiques stores and historic buildings undergoing long-overdue renovations. Named after a Serbian film that won a cult following in Russia, the restaurant offers cuisine with a Serbian focus as well as plenty of Russian and international standards. The good roasted meats are grilled on a spit in the middle of the hall. You can also sample rice-based salads and tangy sausages. At night the understated black-and-white hall turns into disco, the black lights go on, and you can no longer tell what color your stuffed tomatoes are.
